Brain Freeze

Last week marked the official start to the semester. Back to working in hyperdrive, racing around as fast as my heels can carry me, trying to keep up with teaching and forever at the mercy of the undergrads. I’ve also introduced 3 new students into the lab this semester. I have a feeling that the biggest lesson they’ll learn from me in the next four months is: It’s really really really hard to set up a lab!

Perhaps the most terrifying part about starting this all over again is the paralyzing fear that comes from having people rely on you – for their education, for their research career. Worrying that, despite all of the work and studying and papers I’ve done thus far, that there are things they will need from me that I just don’t know. Or there will be that moment where I have a complete brain freeze and stand up there like a dear in headlights. But, I suppose there are those moments in everyone’s day, week, year, where you have to admit to your students what you don’t know and embark on the exciting journey of discovering it with them.

As crazy as I know it’s going to be, I’m truly excited to get back to teaching, There’s something amazing about looking out into a sea of undergrad faces or over at your new, eager grad students and wonder which one of them is going to be the next Sylvia Earle. Or Cousteau. And to think I could play even a small part in the scientists they are becoming is a pretty awesome feeling.

These amazing heels were my latest splurge from Shoe Bakery, and were my present to myself for surviving last semester. I don’t think there’s anything more emblematic of my fear of imminent brain freeze than ice cream heels.

Although it’s not as well advertised, all of Shoe Bakery’s designs can be made in a lower heel, should the platforms look intimidating. I opted for the 4″ heel in these cookies & cream cuties, which I must say is rather perfect as I march on down the hallway to my new lab, science crystallizing in my wake. And as this dress from Tuesday Rose Vintage was reminiscent of Neapolitan ice cream, I thought they were a match made in frozen food heaven…

So begins another week – classes to teach, labs to prepare. But this dress + shoes combo might just be the cream filling of the Oreo cookie that is Monday…
