Cat Got Your Tongue?

Cat Got Your Tongue? - The Dressed Aesthetic

We are successfully transitioning into our lives here in the US. In truth, we still feel a bit as though we’re on vacation, as we’re visiting family in San Diego for the week and are in the all-too-familiar whirlwind of dinners out, meeting up with long-lost friends, and tripping over our many suitcases. All the makings of a good holiday.

This was one of the outfits I planned prior to the move – I am amassing quite the collection of Retrospec’d dresses (case in point here). I have to say, they’re perfect for traveling. I love the cut, the shape, and knowing that, even in my jet-lagged, bedraggled state, I can slip one over my head and instantly look stylish and put together. They were definitely easier to acquire in Australia, being based in Sydney, but I’ve discovered through my fashion sleuthing that Unique Vintage carries select pieces from their range. I was overjoyed to know it was one farewell I wouldn’t have to make!

Despite both AUS and the US sharing a common language, I have to say I’m still managing to get a bit tongue tied now that we’re back and feeling a little out of sorts. A simple act of walking down the street becomes more than a little bit of a bumble as I try to veer left and the rest of the world is veering right. Heads cock, eyebrows raise when I ask where “the bin” is or for some “tom-ah-toes” on my salad. And there’s an internal translation struggle – I probably look like I’m having some incongruous cat-got-my-tongue fit when I start a sentence, “Can you tell me where the nearest……ergh….petrol – gas- PETROL…NO GAS!….station is?” Sigh. We ex-expats take a little while to readjust…

Despite the language barrier, we’re adjusting quite well. And I have naturally found my comfort zone, which is vintage stores! I was able to visit two of my absolute favorites this past weekend – Frock You and The Girl Can’t Help It. Despite feeling completely overwhelmed by my vintage collection while packing, and vowing to downsize, that all flew magically out the window at the sight of few new 1950’s beauties I just had to have.

Ah well, you can take the girl out of Australia…
