I’ve always been a fan of color. Not one to hide in the shadows, I eagerly reach for vibrant reds and electric blues – any way to bring a bit of brightness into my day. So, the neutral ends of my wardrobe can be a bit sparse. It’s not that I don’t enjoy black and white and browns and beige, but they just aren’t always on my radar (particularly when under-caffienated).
Well, this dress jumped on my radar the minute she appeared at Unique Vintage, seeming all kinds of Tim Burton fabulous. She might look a bit familiar, as I own her pink counterpart and am nothing but pink sugary sweetness every time I put that pastel cutie on. But this black & white Hamilton dress is like her rebellious younger sister. A bit more bold, with a healthy disrespect for authority. She sneaks out on the weekends past curfew to see indie rock bands, dances till 3am, and always seems to carry with her an aura of mystery. And when I woke up this morning, amidst a sea of color in my wardrobe, let’s just say I was feeling rebellious….
Like the pink Hamilton dress, I went with a medium here. And as before, it was perfectly snug, if a smidge tighter across the bust (mine measured 34.5-35″ bust and 28″ waist). But, she had all of those details I love so much – the lovely light cotton, the tie shoulder straps, and the contrasting panels of fabric. Although some who own this dress found that the buttons were loose on theirs, I never had an issue at all and my buttons have stayed put, despite putting this dress through my usual paces of sciencing, coffee, rinse, repeat.
If you haven’t taken the plunge on one of these dresses (they have it in green and floral too!), I can’t recommend it enough. It’s light and breezy and ridiculously flattering. I love that they have this black and white version for those who don’t want too much color. Or for those of us looking to go rogue (well, as rogue as one can be with a rainbow of crinolines and a pineapple purse).
I do have something to confess – I bought these shoes for my sister for her birthday. Not this exact pair – I’m not so mean that I would deny my sister a birthday gift in favor of my own footwear enjoyment. But, while my sister and I have different taste on some things, in the places where it overlap we really overlap. We have a tendency to buy each other a gift for a birthday or holiday, hold out for about a week while we stare at it lustfully, and then give in and immediately buy one for ourselves. Sometimes we give up the farce completely and just buy a second one when while still in the store. I like to think it keeps us joined in sisterly fashion….
One area where we tend to be very different is in our handbag preferences. On a recent spa weekend, my sister and I happened upon an outlet mall (Danger! Danger Will Robinson!). While she found the most perfect buttery yellow tote, all clean lines and soft leather, I nearly went gaga in Kate Spade for the novelty bags. I can’t tell you how happy I am to be in the same country, where we can enabling each others shopping habits properly.
