Six Years & Counting

Six Years & Counting - The Dressed Aesthetic

This coming weekend marks my 6-year anniversary of being married to pretty much the best guy on earth for me. Simply put, we compliment each other. Cause it’s never about a perfect person (which just doesn’t exist) – but the perfect pairing. I’m always a bit surprised when our anniversary comes around, particularly attaching a number to our time together, because it’s honestly hard for me to remember a time  in my life when my husband wasn’t in it.

As most of you know, I get dressed up for a Tuesday. A trip to the hardware store. Any excuse really. So, when there’s an actual OCCASION that presents itself, I need no further prompting. I’ve been going through possible outfit options for weeks (hey, some people like sports), and finally decided to just go all in – which for me involves tulle, lace, and glitter. And then more glitter.

I firmly believe that dresses can sometimes sit in your closet, just waiting for the perfect opportunity. I’ve had this dress from Adored Vintage for a couple of years, but the stars never quite aligned for me to wear her. Now, I’m glad I saved her for just the right night and just the right event. I can’t think of a better time for her maiden voyage than to celebrate 6 years of unbridled married awesome.

Every couple celebrates anniversaries and special events differently. Some acknowledge it but don’t feel the need to make a big deal. Some exchange gifts, some don’t. Some prefer heartfelt cards or handmade gifts. Mr. Dressed and I are one of those couples who love to go all out. We always commemorate the event with a dinner out that involves getting fancy and finding each other something special. And I am of the school of thought that gifts shouldn’t just be reserved for the lady of the house (I never understood that. Guys like gifts too!).

So, though I usually stress for weeks on what to get him (he’s the hardest person to buy for. Seriously), I feel really proud of myself this year. I don’t want to brag, but I may be in for Wife of the Year… Or at least the bronze medal. I’ll fill you in on the actual gift next week, cause chances are he’s reading this right now and I don’t want to spoil the surprise!

In addition to the Presents Extravaganza, Mr. Dressed has booked us dinner at Restaurant Amusé – one of our very favorite restaurants in Perth. They offer a dégustation menu, but it’s generally a mystery until you arrive. Seriously, all you get on their website is a list of seasonal ingredients. Though they cater for dietary requirements, they cook for what’s currently striking their fancy and you don’t ‘order’ anything in the traditional sense. They just bring out plate after plate of deliciousness. The control freak in me is always a bit anxious, but the more we’ve gone the more I realize there’s something beautiful about surrendering control and trusting that they won’t let you down. And they never have.

I love the element of surprise commingling with the need to trust and be vulnerable – not dissimilar to love. You don’t always know what twists and turns might get thrown at you, or get to control every circumstance. But, sometimes you need to jump with both feet and trust that, whatever comes, you’ll get through it together.

Happy six years.

xoxo
