The Life Aquatic

The Life Aquatic - The Dressed Aesthetic

I haven’t officially started yet at my new University, but I’ve been made an Adjunct Professor and therefore have access to my new lab and office. I’ve also been taking advantage of getting here a bit early to learn the campus (a sense of direction jumped a generation in my family) and get to know my colleagues. Most members of my Department I met during my interview, but there are dozens of other faculty members from different Departments who I’ve had the chance to shake hands with. I usually greet them and we do the standard small talk. And after about a minute or two of polite chit-chat, suddenly this look comes across their face and they exclaim, “Wait a minute! YOU’RE the SHARK GIRL?!?” Ahhh yes. Yes I am. I see my reputation has preceded me…

Although everyone thinks they’re the first to bestow this magical nickname upon me, I almost don’t have the heart to tell them of their unoriginality. But I don’t mind – I wear the badge of Shark Girl proudly. And though I haven’t subjected them to the full impact of my wardrobe yet (for the simple fact that it’s not yet in the country), I can assure you it won’t be long before I am also “That Girl Who Wears All of the Dresses” or “The Girl With the Shark Shoes.” Cause boy are they something special.

All in good time….

I had someone ask me the other day if I would ever give up science in favor of my vintage passion. A very fair question. And I have to answer honestly: I will always love vintage and the frission of passion we share – but science is and will forever be my first love. The first thing I remember getting excited about. The first thing that made sense to me. Pure and honest and unwavering. The thing I felt a drive towards when I was 5 years old and the very same thing that compelled me to move 10,000 miles away from home nearly 2 decades after my youthful proclamation.

And vintage will always be my escape. The thing I both lose and find myself in. The thing that brings out my best and brings me inexplicable joy. The thing that never has and never will stress me out. And that is sacred.

Vintage brings out my heart and science brings out my mind. I feel very, very fortunate that I have both.

What’s your match made in heaven?

xoxo
