Butterfly Kisses

I think we all have our own personal rules for styling, whether they be conscious or unconscious. And when we reach for items from our closet in the morning, these rules are clanging around in our heads. For me, little voices say: Don’t pair navy shoes with a black skirt. Don’t wear socks with flip-flops (shudder). After you’re fully dressed, remove one accessory (oh Chanel). Try to incorporate color, pattern, texture and shine into every look. Embrace the pop color.

Now, some people may have the rule “Don’t dress in themes.” I simply don’t have this rule. I LOVE a good theme. If I’m going to the movies, you betcha I’m bringing my popcorn purse. Have a Dorothy-esque dress? Wouldn’t that look adorable with my miniature barn purse (and Willie, of course)? And a picnic print dress is just incomplete without a s’mores necklace and a mini picnic basket bag…

I may have had a second’s pause when I pulled this beautiful butterfly dress out of my closet and spotted the perfect vintage butterfly bag nestled on the shelf and my sparkly belt that emulates butterfly wings. I may have asked myself, “Too much?” for about a millisecond before happily creating my Lepidopter-ific outfit for the day (I should warn you, the science nerd will emerge now and again. I don’t fight it anymore).

So, I suppose the moral of the story is – it’s perfectly acceptable to have rules for yourself. But don’t be afraid to push the boundaries and step outside of those rules once in awhile. Because that’s where the magic happens.

What are your ‘rules’ and how can we break ’em??
