Here Comes the Sunflower

Here Comes the Sunflower - The Dressed Aesthetic

Some days are about practicality (if we’re being honest here, most days). Although it’s pretty obvious my day-to-day style veers towards most people’s fancy, my version of “practical” is a cotton sundress, some sort of sparkly belt, and 40’s inspired heels (which tend to be a bit easier to race around in). But every now and then, I’m in the mood to dress up like a frothy, floral cupcake fantasy. And I’m not sorry….

This beauty came on my radar at Calendar Girl Vintage – I saw, I gasped, I clicked to read more. And then the telltale “RESERVED” signed stared back at me, mocking me with her inaccessibility. But, if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that if you don’t ask, you don’t get the vintage. I sent the lovely Jen a message, letting her know I was very interested should the other sale fall through. And because the vintage gods were all about me that day, the glorious message pinged back that she was no longer reserved. Victory was mine! Sometimes the fantasy really can become the reality…

Very often the inside of vintage garments are just as intriguing as the outside – the sewist in me can’t help but stop to appreciate the internal construction that someone once labored over. This beauty was unlike any I’d ever seen – it has a bodice made in the manner of a vintage swimsuit. By vintage brand DeWeese Designs, there’s a full molded bullet bra inside and a smocked back – I may have the smocking professionally redone at some stage as it’s been worn and loved (as it should be), but this is one of the few dresses in my orbit where no bra is required!

While I wish I were frolicking in fields of daisies, I’m actually hitting the road! This weekend I’ve been invited to speak at an Aquarium in Roanoke, which is an unfortunate 4.5 hour drive away. So, if you happen to be on the road this weekend somewhere between Virginia and North Carolina, I’ll be the gal clad in 1950’s vintage singing Hamilton at the top of her lungs.

Just call me Driving Miss Daisy…
