It Needs a Second Coat

It Needs a Second Coat - The Dressed Aesthetic

Sometimes I think we are programmed for dissatisfaction, particularly when it comes to the weather. Have you ever noticed that, no matter the season, you find yourself gazing wistfully to the next one? Never satisfied, we are constantly craning our necks for greener summer pastures in winter. Yet in the sweltering heat of summer, we fan ourselves and will autumn to arrive more quickly. Although I’m not a huge fan of Jack Frost nipping at my nose, I’m trying to reverse the grass-is-always-greener mentality and embrace the here and now. Because if winter brings with it something magical, it is almost certainly the magic of coats…

I‘ve definitely been feeling the tug at my vintage heartstrings towards coats lately (and ironically, also vintage lingerie. Underwear and outerwear – two vastly underexploited areas of vintage sartorial delights!). Lucky for me, given the season, there are beautiful coats everywhere. Billowing swing coats, fitted princess coats, elegant capes. Cropped, buttoned, or festooned in embroidery. So, when I saw this sumptuous cape at Lady Jane Vintage, fur trimmed and winking of cozy nights by the fire, who was I to resist?

If I can’t have what I want, let me want what I have.

It’s definitely been a busy winter break (I think we need a new word. “break” isn’t going to cut it). From traveling to San Diego for the holidays, to caring for an ailing Mr. Dressedapp while he battled the flu, to zipping off yet again to Tampa for a conference, I’m not sure I feel adequately recharged. I could almost certainly use a second coat of winter vaca paint, just to make sure all of the bare spots are covered.

But, Time has a funny way or marching on despite my best efforts to slow it down. I mean, if she would only negotiate. Move half as quickly. Sneak in an extra hour or two. Something. But like the cruel mistress she is, Monday has inevitably arrived, bringing with it the new Spring semester and the latest crop of neuroscience students and a flurry of lecture-grading-deadline-laced madness. Not ever one to pass up a last hurrah, I needed the perfect dress to end the holidays with a bang. And I’ve had this pink beauty from the lovely Monique tucked away for ages, just waiting for the perfect occasion to wear her. It turns out, my last weekend of freedom was just such an occasion.

So, swathed in pink and blue, fur and freedom, I caught myself gazing wistfully back at the start of winter break, when it felt that infinite weeks of relaxation lay before me. Wishing for just one more day, where there were far fewer demands on my attention and time.

After all, don’t we always want what we can’t have?
