Laundry Day

Laundry Day - The Dressed Aesthetic

Have you ever noticed that, for a lot of people, ‘dressing up’ is synonymous with laundry day? As in, there’s nothing else to wear except for the beautiful dresses that languish in the back of my closet, because everything else is in the wash? The other day I was racing to and fro (as I do) and a woman stopped me on my way from Point A to Point B. She complimented my floral dress and laughingly inquired whether it was laundry day. I winked back, “Nope, just Tuesday!”

In honor of Laundry Day dresses everywhere, I knew this amazing skirt from Tea Street Vintage needed a twirl. I’m always on the lookout for my next vintage novelty skirt, and have never seen another quite like it – with appliquéd shirts, pants, and skirts strung on a sartorial clothesline. It looks to be handmade, with each individual garment stitched and cut and placed with care. I can’t help but wonder if the woman who made her and wore her had a bit of an arched eyebrow when she did so. A woman who smirked at the mere concept that dressing up was reserved only for laundry day, rather than any old day we please.

I can imagine her finishing the skirt with flair, donning her petticoat and heels, and swishing out the door with a bit of “I’ll show YOU laundry day” kind of sass. Needless to say, she was probably my kind of gal…

In a funny twist of irony, my laundry pile actually is currently up to the sky and I see a weekend of hand washing in my future. The summer has past by in a blur of work and travel and a lot of my household to do’s have fallen by the wayside a bit.

One thing that has been taking up a fair bit of my spare time is (wait for it…) My Annual Closet Cleanout! I’m in the process of working through the piles and trying to ruthlessly part with things that just don’t fit or I just don’t wear. There will be a mix of vintage-inspired and vintage pieces I’m parting with – and I’m planning a big cull. Stay tuned for the details, but it’ll likely be coming in a few weeks.

Now, back to laundry….

xoxo
