Well, it’s official. We have finally made it to our new home in North Carolina! This is not to say that our work is done, but I can finally breathe a sigh of relief that all of the major To Do Items have been ticked off – nearly everything we own is on a boat and Mr. Dressed, Willie and Finn and I are tucked into our temporary rental, ready to explore our surroundings.
Looking back, it feels as though the whole experience was part of the Indie 500. Eyes on the goal, speeding forward at 150 miles per hour to get there. I suppose today’s green striped vintage dress from Capsule Vintage is more than a little apropos – it did always look to me as though matchbox cars could zoom up her stripes and off into an emerald sunset. Time raced right along with those zippy cars these past few months – it still hasn’t sunk in that we’ve actually accomplished the impossible. Namely: Move Thyself to the Other Side of the Globe.
In keeping with the theme, the goal for the week is to get me a new set of wheels. I’ve been pouring over car websites and my head is spinning with incentives and features. I’ve never really been a car girl, but walking onto those lots, with automotive temptresses beckoning me with their shimmering paint and chrome, and I have to say more than a few vehicles turned my head. But, it’s important to remain practical. As with most big purchases, you have your list of Must Haves and your list of Really Nice to Haves…and then your list of If Money Were No Object & I Just Want to Pimp My Ride Haves. Yeah…I’m sticking mostly to Column A….
I forgot how exhausting car buying could be. Because Mr. Dressed and I are both looking for cars and want slightly different things, we’re visiting pretty much every dealer on the block and test driving multiple models. In one car, out of another. As much as my head is spinning from all of the choices, it’s kind of exciting to decide what shall be my chariot for the next 5+ years.
Otherwise, we’re settling into our new digs very well. We’ve sorted out most of the essentials and are trying to get into a semi-normal work week. As I don’t officially start my new job until January, I’m working from home, working on papers and writing lectures for the upcoming Spring semester. No rest for the weary – but then again I always did like it in hyper drive…
