Waiting to Bloom

Waiting to Bloom - The Dressed Aesthetic

I was chatting with the ladies at work the other day, and admitted that I never dress for the weather. Instead, I dress for the weather I want. Lately, I’ve found myself squinting at the cloudy skies and pelting rain and defiantly pulling out my sunniest yellow dresses and most vibrant florals. Cold air may reign, but my rose printed vintage dresses are putting up a good fight. Regardless of the fact that Mother Nature is taking her sweet old time, no matter how grey the day may get, you can just peek into my office and see Spring just waiting to bloom…

Even though it may not be Spring (but seriously, hurry UP), I am officially in the throws of Spring Break! I’ve been trying to balance my time between catching up on work and catching up on hobbies. I’ve been chipping away at grading literature reviews and working on an upcoming publication, but have also made a decent dent in my sewing pile (though I swear that thing never gets smaller no matter how many pieces I work on), and have caught up on blog posts and the like. There is nothing quite like taking a deep breath and feeling like you don’t have to race from one task to the next. If I want to work on the midterm I’ll be giving my students week after next, I can. If I want to have a Tim Gunn marathon and binge watch back episodes of Project Runway, I can. Freedom really is a beautiful thing….

You don’t have to remind a flower when its time to bloom is near; it has been preparing for it all of its life.

This was one dress that has sat in my sewing pile for what feels like forever. I love unearthing beauties I forgot about, particularly because it’s like buying a new dress without having to part with any of your hard earned cash. This beauty needed a restitched hem and a bit more wiggle room in the bust, and she was ready to burst forth from her wintery solitude and rejoin the closet again. Rain or shine, winter or Spring, it was just her time.

Pulling this dress on this morning made me realize I will always love duplicity in my style. Wearing florals in winter. White after Labor Day. Finding modern shoes to pair with a 1950’s dress. Soft, girlie prints and tough studded belts. Anything that keeps people guessing and reminds us that there are no rules to follow. Only rules to bend.

How have you bent the rules today?
